Route Driver & Wellness Pantry Associate

East Cooper Community Outreach (ECCO) was founded as an emergency relief effort in 1989 after the devastation from Hurricane Hugo, and has since grown into a permanent resource for the community in times of personal need. Income eligible individuals and families may receive food, clothing, financial assistance, and have access to dental care, medical care, prescription assistance, and guidance towards other necessary services. These services are all enhanced through personal interaction with staff who provide ongoing check-ins, and emphasize accountability and achievement.

Position Summary:
This full-time position is responsible for the daily pick-up, loading/unloading, stocking and accountability of food donations from ECCO’s community supporters and partner organizations. Individuals with delivery, grocery, inventory, or retail experience are encouraged to apply. This position requires positive, public interaction with ECCO’s retail partners, partner agencies, clients, donors, staff and volunteers. Applicants must have an excellent driving record and the ability to repetitively lift up to 50 pounds. 

Work hours will range from 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM Monday-Friday. Exact days and times to be determined

This position reports directly to the Wellness Pantry Manager.

Education and Requirements to Apply:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • A valid South Carolina driver’s license *must be willing to provide a current ten year MVP (driving record) without any moving violations in the past three years*
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs. frequently and repetitively
  • Comfortable working in a warehouse environment and in extreme hot or cold temperatures
  • Must be willing to participate in a background check
  • Willing and able to use your personal cell phone for email, text, calendars and GPS

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Check email at the start of each shift to stay apprised of scheduling changes and updates
  • Pick-up donated food at various locations in the East Cooper area, including grocery stores, schools, churches and businesses
  • Load and unload donations to and from ECCO’s refrigerated van to ECCO’s Wellness Pantry
  • Track and record weight of received donated food
  • Organize and stock warehouse shelves in the Wellness Pantry 
  • Follow assigned routes working efficiently to meet the physical demands of the position
  • Be knowledgeable about food safety and ensure ECCO’s compliance with stated guidelines
  • Maintain the cleanliness and upkeep of ECCO’s van 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities Continued

  • Maintain a clothing container on ECCO property by checking daily to rotate bins inside the container. Once they are filled, load them into a van and deliver them to the clothing closet. Pick up empty bins at the clothing closet and return to the clothing container at ECCO
  • Communicate effectively with Retail Partners and supporters of ECCO’s Wellness Pantry
  • Supervise warehouse volunteers and daily operations
  • Ensure a high degree of detail and efficiency with all tasks
  • Provide assistance to the Wellness Pantry Manager
  • Attend organizational events and meetings as directed by your supervisor
  • Other duties as assigned

During certain times of the year, the hours may expand to meet the demand for additional donation pickups. The Associate may also be required to attend a limited number of special events in the evenings or on weekends, including the first Saturday of each month from 8:30-noon.

Dental Hygienist

ECCO is looking to contract multiple dental hygienists to share a flexible, rotating schedule offering hygiene services on Fridays from 10-2 (other days and times are also open for consideration). This position will provide excellent oral hygiene care and oral health education to patients of the ECCO dental clinic. Our clinic serves our uninsured neighbors at no cost.

Applicants for this position must have an understanding of public health, service to the community, empathy, and a passion for ECCO’s mission. Individuals hired in this contract capacity will interact with ECCO patients, clients, volunteers, staff, medical professionals, medical students, vendors, and partner agencies. The individuals in this role must maintain the utmost professionalism to protect patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations and ECCO confidentiality policies. 

Required Certifications, Education, and Experience:  

  • A graduate of a Dental Hygiene program that meets or exceeds the standards established by the ADA
  • Possess & maintains a valid South Carolina state dental hygienist license 
  • American Heart Association BLS certificate
  • Preferably two years of experience, minimum
  • Knowledge, use, and experience with Dentrix

Responsibilities: 

  • Review patient’s medical and dental history for evidence of past and present conditions such as illnesses or social behaviors that may complicate or alter dental hygiene treatment 
  • Examine teeth and surrounding tissues for evidence of plaque and periodontal disease; inspect the mouth and throat for evidence of disease such as oral cancer; interpret routine x-rays to identify tooth structures, calculus, and abnormalities such as cavities and deep periodontal pockets 
  • Prepare dental hygiene treatment plans for assessment of the problem, type of oral hygiene care required, and the sequence of appointments needed to complete treatment 
  • Provide dental hygiene procedures and home care instruction to patients 
  • Chart abnormalities such as cavities, traumatic occlusion, or lesions 
  • Be knowledgeable of current infection control procedures and OSHA guidelines in order to set up treatment room and check, sterilize, and maintain instruments 
  • Assist clinic staff and volunteer professional providers with clinic operations 
  • This position is paid on an hourly basis with an expected weekly total of 4-8 hours. ** Exact hours and days are TBD based on the availability of the hygienist.
  • The hourly rate of pay is $30.00 and contract employees are responsible for submitting their own invoices for payment.                                                                                                                                      

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work requires reaching, and recurring bending to perform intra-oral procedures. The hygienist must also demonstrate above-average dexterity in manipulating sharp dental instruments. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work involves regular and recurring exposure to potential hazards of radiation and communicable diseases. Employees are required to wear personal protective equipment and follow appropriate protective measures.

Philanthropy & Stewardship Coordinator

East Cooper Community Outreach is seeking an energetic and dedicated professional to serve as a part-time Philanthropy & Stewardship Coordinator. Reporting to the Director of Development & Marketing at ECCO, this position will support ECCO’s Annual Fund efforts, as well as cultivate an active donor community through the Life Ring and Legacy Giving Societies.

The Philanthropy & Stewardship Coordinator will follow a comprehensive development plan, but must also be a self-starter who possesses strong organizational and communication skills as well as an ability to work independently and as part of a team. Critical components of this role include annual fund solicitation, major and capital fundraising, donor cultivation, volunteer engagement, event sponsorship, prospecting, matching gift solicitation, and a strong focus on donor stewardship and retention. The ideal candidate will work in a long-term partnership with the organization’s leadership to develop and implement strategies to manage and cultivate a robust portfolio of 250+ donors.

The ideal candidate will possess an appreciation of service to the community, empathy and a passion for ECCO’s mission. This individual will interact with ECCO volunteers, staff, board members, clients, donors and community partners. The individual in this role must maintain the utmost professionalism and follow ECCO confidentiality policies. ECCO staff members  act with a proactive mindset, always striving for efficiency and process improvement.

This position will increase the awareness of ECCO in the community to potential and existing stakeholders to help the organization advance its mission.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5 years minimum related experience or an equivalent combination
  • Proven success in relational philanthropy through building trust and maintaining long-term relationships with partners – including donors, volunteers, community members, and colleagues
  • Ability to determine an individual’s interest, capacity, and potential for helping ECCO meet its goals
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Gmail
  • Previous use with a CRM platform or donor database management (CharityProud is a plus)


Desired Qualifications

  • A high degree of initiative and ability to work independently without close daily supervision
  • Enjoys working in a fast-paced environment and spending time with donors outside of the office
  • Experience in soliciting and securing gifts of $1,000 or more
  • Excellent collaboration, time management, organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication, sense of customer service, and passion for the nonprofit community

This part-time (up to 29 hours a week) position is part of the Development and Marketing team, reporting directly to the Director of Development & Marketing. Typical work hours vary from 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Additionally, this position may be required to attend a limited number of special events in the evenings or on weekends.

Dental Care Coordinator

The Dental Care Coordinator will have two main responsibilities. The first responsibility is to serve as a Dental Assistant to our volunteer dental providers and dental students ensuring patient rooms are well equipped and sanitized properly for treatment. The second responsibility is serving in a receptionist capacity. This includes receiving and scheduling eligible patients for treatment, maintaining patient follow-up for missed appointments and post treatment, scheduling transportation for those who need it, as well as entering and maintaining records in a dual set of electronic systems, including Dentrix and Charity Tracker. 

Applicants for this position will interact with ECCO clients, patients, volunteers, staff, medical professionals, medical students, vendors and partner agencies. Required Education and Certifications: 

Certified Dental Assistant, with a minimum of 1- 2 years of experience and CPR certified. Two year college degree preferred 

Preferred Skills of Qualified Applicants: 

  • Familiarity with Dentrix – dental practice management software 
  • Ability to learn the organization’s client database, Charity Tracker and other necessary software systems 
  • Experience in Microsoft Word and Google Workspace 
  • Exemplary customer service and organizational skills 
  • Spanish speaking, a plus 

Primary Duties: 

  1. Patient Care
  • Works with the Senior Manager of Health Services and Dental Clinicians to ensure professional, quality dental care provided at all times to ECCO clients and patients 
  • Serves as an assistant to volunteer dental clinicians in a variety of complex oral procedures performed including:
  • Takes preliminary dental impressions; pours and trims study models from impressions
  • Maintains dental equipment and ensures clinic furnishings are in clean and operative condition
  • Provides postsurgical instructions to patient as directed by dentist
  • Operates dental X-ray equipment to take intra- and extra-oral radiographs
  • Retrieves digital images
  • Sterilizes instruments, materials, and equipment; prepares surgical trays
  • Charts examination and treatment information by dentist to patient on prescriptions and other treatment follow-up. 
  • Observes patients for obvious signs of discomfort, illness or stress notifying the dentist on site of perceived emergencies 
  • Ensures infection control standards are being met by all providers and staff
  • Makes referrals to other ECCO programs based on medical or personal history related by patient to ensure their needs are being addressed

Physical Demands: Work involves regular and recurring exposure to potential hazards of radiation and communicable diseases. Employees are required to wear personal protective equipment and follow appropriate protective measures. Long periods of bending, standing and walking are required. 

  1. Patient Administration 
  • Performs a full range of receptionist, record keeping and clerical duties to keep the ECCO Dental Clinic functioning with accuracy and efficiency 
  • Schedules and coordinates appointments for patients and explains clinic appointment procedures and priority of treatment 
  • Follows established office procedures for uninsured clients and patients seeking treatment, including screening patients to ensure they meet eligibility requirements for treatment
  • Obtains, reviews and updates any necessary medical records of patients prior to an appointment. 
  • Aids in the orientation and training of rotating dental residents, dental students and volunteers 

This part-time, hourly position (up to 16 hours a week) is part of the Health Services Department and Dental Clinic Team, reporting to the Senior Manager of Health Services. This position is not eligible for benefits. Typical work hours vary from 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM Monday through Friday, with the possibility of occasional service at the Extraction Clinic on Tuesday and Thursday from 4PM – 7PM. This position may be required to attend a limited number of special events in the evenings or on weekends promoting and benefitting ECCO.

Lead Dentist

The Lead Dentist of ECCO’s dental clinic is an Independent 1099 contractor position which extends the individual’s South Carolina Dental License to ECCO for the clinic’s continued operations. The first and foremost responsibility of the position is to provide clinical care to the clients of ECCO’s Dental Clinic. Secondarily, is to provide clinical oversight by all providers including staff, volunteer dentists, and dental students. This means ensuring continuity and quality of care, as well as serving as the lead instructor of dental and dental hygiene students during their rotations in our clinic.

**Per our agreement with the Medical University of SC preceptors must provide direct supervision to MUSC Dental students and maintain adjunct status with the university.

** Per our agreement with TTC, Section 2.08 “Designate a Fieldwork Supervisor/a staff member who will be responsible for the field work or clinical experience.”

**As a 1099 contract employee, direct benefits are not provided.  However, ECCO will continue to maintain Medical Professional Liability insurance for the dental clinic. The slot policy covers one dentist working in the clinic at any one time. Our policy includes coverage of $3M per incident / $6M annual aggregate.  

General Duties:
The Lead Dentist is a part time Independent 1099 Contract position up to, but no more than 28 hours a week including the evening Extraction Clinic, which is currently held on Thursdays from 5PM-7PM.** It is expected that the Lead Dentist be on-call for clinical consultation (via phone) from fellow dentists volunteering in the no-cost clinic or to fill-in for volunteer dentists as needed.

**Please note that all services and schedules will be mutually agreed upon based on availability of the provider
and needs of our Health Services Clients.

Role and Responsibilities of the Lead Dentist:
Provide clinical care
● Works with the clinic staff and local health entities to ensure all regulatory standards by OSHA and DHEC are being met and develops or approves clinical protocol to ensure compliance with changes in local, state and national standards of care
● Executes general dentistry procedures including: use of local anesthetic(s), and dental care instruction, comprehensive oral examinations, panoramic x-rays and analysis of them, evaluations of dental needs, and the development of treatment plans
● Ensures accuracy and routine maintenance of patient’s clinical records
● Provides constructive assessment of the clinical execution of dental team staff members for their annual reviews
● Has an understanding of the clients and their potential challenges, the clinic’s annual operating budget, production numbers, and required equipment to perform our provided services.
Provide clinical oversight and serve as the lead instructor for dental student rotations
● Serves as the preceptor/attending for MUSC undergraduate dental students, per the mutually agreed up upon student rotation schedule with MUSC and communicates any changes or requirements of the university to the staff of ECCO
● Ensures volunteer professionals have current licenses, are in good standing with the LLR State Board of Dentistry and meet requirements of MUSC College of Dental Medicine.
● Works with the Senior Manager of Health Services to maintain quality operations, client centered service and good working relationship between all partners, vendors and volunteers.
Public Relations
● Works with ECCO staff to build and expand the clinic’s presence in the community, including the recruitment of volunteers and contributing to communications with the local dental community
Required Education and Licensure:
● Graduate of an accredited School of Dentistry preferably with a degree in dental surgery (D.D.S.) or dental medicine (D.M.D.)
● Must have a Valid SC Dental License
● Has or is willing to meet the Adjunct Professor credentialing standards of the Medical University of South Carolina College of Dental Medicine
● American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate of training
