Angel Sighting at BCCOC
Angels come in many forms depending on culture. In the Huger-Wando (Cainhoy) communities, they come in the form of Yvonne Lincoln as part of the Angel Tree Program in collaboration with the Mount Pleasant Towne Centre, East Cooper Community Outreach (ECCO), thoughtful Santas and Mrs. Clauses, and many dedicated volunteers. This program has been fulfilling the Christmas wishes of enthusiastic children in our communities for the past seven years.
In 2009, ECCO’s program staff established this community outreach initiative through an expanded partnership with the Towne Centre and Mrs. Lincoln, first working with local churches and eventually integrating with the Cainhoy Elementary and Middle School. Christ Our King Catholic Church has been a vital component of this program’s success – with many generous donors contributing gifts.
This is how the program works: parents complete a form to determine a child or children’s participation in the program. With the parent’s approval, each child composes a Christmas gift wish list. Mrs. Lincoln reviews the list, and the work begins. She coordinates all elements of the program with the Towne Centre, ECCO, and volunteers. Thoughtful individuals pick names from the Angel Tree and purchase the wish list items. Once gifts are purchased, they are picked up from the Towne Centre, assigned distribution codes, and delivered to a designated location.
The Baldwin Carson Community Outreach Center (BCCOC), ECCO’s satellite facility in Huger, has served as the distribution site for the Angel Tree Program over the last two years. Parents visit BCCOC to pick-up the gifts for their children during two weeks in December. We anticipate more than 200 presents were given out as part of the 2016 Angel Tree Program.
This season of giving has truly been a blessing to the Huger-Wando area thanks to local supporters and friends who are our living angels.
